Tips to Score Well in Describe the Image Section of PTE

The increasing popularity of PTE as an English language proficiency test has made it one of the most preferred tests for international students coming into Australia for higher education. The test gauges the candidates’ speaking, reading, writing and listening skills, just like IELTS, TOEFL, etc.

We often come across students who need more practice in one, two or even more modules at times. Mostly, we help them with mock tests and provide them with a few tips that may help them score well in the weaker module(s). When it comes to PTE coaching, most of the PTE tutorials teach a few tips & tricks to the students that help them cruise through various sections of the test in an easier manner. Herein, today, we discuss how one can score well in the Describe the Image section of the PTE Academic exam.

About this Section

The Describe the Image section in PTE Academic comes under the ‘Speaking’ module wherein the candidate is required to describe the important information in a table, a process, a graph, a series of graphs, or a map. The candidate gets 25 seconds to prepare for the answer and needs to speak for 40 seconds on each image. Every image is for 15 marks.

Tips to Score Well

Although the below-mentioned tips are not exhaustive, they cover almost everything. The idea is to understand the section well and be descriptive and expressive while attempting. These tips will surely help the candidates score well in this particular section.

Understand the Image

It is very essential to understand the provided image correctly. It can be a table, a process, a graph, a series of graphs, or a map denoting some findings. Understand the provided image and the findings in that image. Most of the images generally show a trend that the candidates need to ascertain. Read the title thoroughly and comprehend everything that is possible about that image. It can be just about anything; the idea is to understand it the way it is.

Mark the Findings

Once the candidate has understood the image, the next crucial step is to mark the findings. As time is a constraint here, one needs to do all this exercise at the back of the head and be agile enough to decipher the image and the findings in it.

Once the candidate has marked the findings, he/she can describe the findings sequentially.

Be Descriptive and Conclusive

When describing the given image, it is very important to be both descriptive and conclusive. Describe the findings sequentially and give a resultant/conclusive statement at the end of the description, thereby giving the impression that the image and the findings within have been understood well.

Do Not Repeat Information

One of the most common mistakes we have seen the candidates making is repeating the information, which is the direct result of candidates not paying enough attention to the given image. When the candidate is not able to decipher the given image correctly, the chances are that the findings drawn from the image are either less or incorrect, thereby leading to either misinformation or lack of information, eventually pushing the candidate to repeat the information when describing the image.

This is the reason we reemphasize the students to understand the given image thoroughly and mark their findings accordingly.

Conclusion

As mentioned above, the aforementioned points are not exhaustive and the candidates can get help from many other tips and tricks to crack this section of PTE Academic. Overall, putting the aforementioned tips to practice will help the candidates score well in the Describe the Image section of PTE Academic.
